Fourfold purposes of the Church?

I don't know if this is news for those of you that are Utards or not, but this is the first I've heard of this out here in the PNW.

The LDS Church is adding "to care for the poor and needy" to its longstanding "threefold mission," which is to preach the LDS gospel, purify members' lives and provide saving ordinances such as baptism to those who have died.
Very nice. That fits in well and explains why there seemed to be an increased amount of talks on that subject the last conference or two.

I really like the title of your blog. "Conservative Cake and Liberal icing. Your thought put down on electronic paper."

Creative and witty~ :)

I'm not LDS but I've always been a believer of helping the needy and poor. I'm glad to see the LDS church is joining in with other churches in helping the needy and poor.

This announcement makes me happy, and it makes me laugh at the same time. Apparently the members didn't get this aspect of the mission of "perfecting the saints" so the Brethren had to clarify it even more.
It makes me laugh even more because of an incident I had last night. We went for a session at the Draper temple and I saw something quite ironic. Inside the chapel there is a beautiful painting depicting the moment when the rich, young man came to the savior as described in Matthew 19:16-30. What makes the painting ironic, is that outside that temple are many gargantuan homes that have been built. Some of those homes are over 15,000 sq ft. Many of those homes have been built by members of the church. Granted, it's their money and they can do with it as they please. It's just sad to see some proposterously huge homes next to the temple when many people, even in Draper, wonder where they are going to get the money for food, clothes and the next rent check. Apparently those members who built their 10,000+ sq ft homes did not understand that parable and have not gotten the memo to care for the poor and needy. I shouldn't judge, because I don't know them and I don't know their situation. For all I know they could be donating thousands of dollars a month to charities to feed the poor and hungry. It's just weird to see those homes pop up over night once the temple construction sight was announced.

I think the reason why many LDS didn't see 'perfecting the saints" to include this new purpose is because the latter is more inclusive and is not limited to 'the saints' (and should be done regardless of and without proselyting as a primary reason).
